Have you ever wonder where we live or work in the future? You can take a look at The Edge, the smartest, greenest office building on earth. The project located in The Zuidas, Amsterdam and completed in 2015, designed by PLP Architecture.
As we getting more aware for our responsibility to the environment, every industry started to change their methods to become more eco-friendly. Including architects and construction companies. They started to work closer together to create increasingly intelligent buildings. One striking example is The Edge in Amsterdam, also called ‘’The Computer with a Roof’’.
The 40,000 m² building in Amsterdam’s Zuidas in comprised of an atrium, offices, conference facilities, a restaurant and cafe, an exhibition space, a gym, two storeys of underground parking, and 500 bicycle parking spaces.
The Edge was awarded a %98.4 sustainability score, the highest ever awarded by the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method). Boasting enormous windows and flooded with natural light, the 15-storey atrium is much more than merely grand statement. It ventilates the office space while acting as a buffer between the interior and exterior, reducing energy usage throughout the seasons.
At The Edge, activity is continuously monitored via its 28,000 sensors that track lighting levels, temperature, movement, an deven carbon dioxide levels. Upon entering the building, you can use and app to locate your colleagues, find a work space that suits a specific requirement and adjust the lighting, the blinds, the temperature, and even the height of your chair.
The Edge is covered with solar panels that produce more energy than the building can consume. In fact, The Edge produces %102 of its energy needs. Rainwater is used to irrigate gardens and indoor plants, and for flushing the toilet.
Smart buildings that solve their own energy, enhance the lives of their occupants and reduce our collective carbon footprint are what people want and our world needs. Even retrofitting existing buildings with smart technology is an increasingly popular option to provide greater sustainability and efficiency.
